The multidisciplinary gender clinic at Seattle Children’s will include coordinated services delivered by healthcare providers from multiple disciplines with support from a dedicated Care Navigator, as well as training to staff and community providers. The Gender Clinic will not only improve healthcare access for young transgender patients in the Puget Sound area, but in doing so will potentially save their lives by reducing their gender dysphoria and suicide risk.
The main goal of this program is to improve access to healthcare for trans-youth by continuing to serve with high-quality, coordinated care. Seattle Children’s currently has as many as 10 new patient families making inquiries every week and many families are having to wait unacceptably long times for readiness assessments before beginning treatment. For this reason, Seattle Children’s will be adding an additional part-time Care Navigator to the clinic. This person will allow providing some of the patients’ readiness assessments directly within the Gender Clinic (rather than referring out to other providers). This will address one of the priorities established by our Seattle Children’s CAB, since the wait time for readiness assessments is a major factor in how quickly a patient can move to puberty blockers.
