HealthPoint’s project is designed to fill an identified unmet need to enhance primary care services for non-English and non-Spanish speaking patients by addressing language barriers and cultural differences. The project’s objective is to give these patients extra attention to help them understand, accept and engage in their plan of care. The project nurse provides the extra provider-patient time needed by the target group to help them accept and incorporate their plan of care with their cultural beliefs and values. The extra attention given by the project nurse aims to improve health outcomes in the target population by addressing patient-level variables that can cause a refusal of services, poor adherence to treatment, and delays in seeking care.
HealthPoint Community Health Center was the pilot partner on this work. HealthPoint is a community health center that provides medical and dental care at 17 clinics in 11 King County locations. They also work beyond their clinics to promote healthy communities.
