Project H.O.P.E. (Homeless Outreach Program and Education) provides dental and interdisciplinary education and outreach opportunities for dental students which aim to serve marginalized populations in and around King County.
A partnership with Medical Teams International provides UW School of Dentistry volunteers access to mobile dental equipment. The PHPDA Nimble Fund Grant enables OEPD to procure equipment (to be set up outside a van or independent of a van) for Project H.O.P.E. that will expand capacity to provide dental treatment to additional 181 clients from marginalized populations per year. This represents a 32 percent increase in the number of clients UW School of Dentistry can serve.
UW School of Dentistry hopes to sustain this outreach effort into 2019 and beyond. By the end of 2020, an estimated additional 456 clients will been examined and treated. The new equipment will create a permanent increase in capacity by helping to grow current outreach efforts and give rise to new opportunities for dental students at the UW School of Dentistry.
