Appropriate general medical care for transgender patients, the lack of access to care and lack of providers with expertise in transgender medicine represents the single largest component inhibiting access. TGNC people have unique and complex healthcare needs related to gender transition, including hormonal therapy and surgery that can create an undesired and unavoidable dependency on the medical system for basic identity expression. This combination of health system dependency for gender identity without trained and informed providers and anticipation of disrespect and discrimination from medical providers results in healthcare access disparity for TGNC people, especially those on Medicaid/Medicare or without insurance.
CDCHC will hire a gender care navigator who will work collaboratively with clinical and nursing staff and CDCHC’s referral team to strengthen referral systems and ultimately integrate gender navigation services as a routine referral responsibility. CDCHC will also add a part time nurse and a part time ARNP to serve as resources for all providers in the organization working to address the complex medical needs of our TGNC population. CDCHC will dedicate part of a data analyst’s time toward ensuring SOGI data is collected from patients during a medical visit. Ingersoll will work with CDCHC to develop continuing medical education materials for providers and training for other staff.
